                           OVERVIEW OF THE PARKS

  1. Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park):
  • Selous, now renamed Nyerere National Park, is one of Africa’s largest and oldest game reserves. It’s known for its large populations of elephantshippos, and crocodiles, as well as lionsbuffaloes, and wild dogs. The reserve is also unique for its Rufiji River, which flows through it, providing exceptional game-viewing opportunities, especially by boat. It offers a more remote and less crowded safari experience compared to the more popular parks.
    1. Mikumi National Park:
  • Mikumi is one of the most accessible parks in Tanzania, offering fantastic game drives with sightings of elephantslionsgiraffes, and buffaloes. The park is characterized by vast plains, wetlands, and a mixture of acacia woodland, making it great for both wildlife and birdwatching. Mikumi is often called “a mini Serengeti” due to its wide-open landscapes and rich wildlife.
    1. Udzungwa Mountains National Park:
  • Udzungwa is a haven for nature lovers, offering a combination of tropical rainforests, waterfalls, and wildlife. It’s less about traditional game-viewing and more about hiking and exploring its incredible biodiversity. Udzungwa is home to the Udzungwa red colobusmonkey, as well as elephantsbuffaloes, and several species of birds. The park is perfect for those who enjoy nature walks and trekking through pristine forests.
    1. Ruaha National Park:
  • Ruaha is one of Tanzania’s largest and most scenic parks, with a wide range of ecosystems and abundant wildlife. The park is home to large populations of elephantslionsleopardswild dogs, and giraffes. The Great Ruaha Riveris a focal point, and the park is a perfect destination for an immersive safari experience, with fewer crowds compared to other parks in Tanzania.

Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar – Transfer to Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park)

  • Arrival: Arrive in Dar es Salaam(or Zanzibar, depending on your international flight).
  • Pick-up: Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your driver-guide and transferred to Selous Game Reserve(approximately 5-6 hours by road or 1 hour by flight from Dar es Salaam).
  • Check-in: Check-in at your lodge or camp within the reserve.
  • Evening Activity: Depending on arrival time, you might enjoy a relaxed evening, with an option for a sunset game drive or boat safari along the Rufiji River.
  • Overnight: Stay at a lodge/camp in the Selous region.

Day 2 & Day 3: Exploring Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park)

  • Morning Game Drive: Start your day with an early morning game driveto explore the park’s rich wildlife, including large herds of elephantsbuffalo, and predators like lions and hyenas.
  • Boat Safari: In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safarion the Rufiji River, offering opportunities to view hipposcrocodiles, and a variety of bird species.

  • Check-in: Check-in at your accommodation in Mikumi.

Day 5: Full Day in Mikumi National Park

  • Overnight: Return to your lodge or camp for the night.

Day 6: Mikumi to Udzungwa Mountains National Park

  • Transfer to Udzungwa: After breakfast, transfer to Udzungwa Mountains National Park(about 2-3 hours by road).
  • Check-in: Check-in at your accommodation near Udzungwa.
  • Afternoon Hike: In the afternoon, embark on a short hike to one of Udzungwa’s beautiful waterfalls, such as the Sanje Waterfall. The park offers stunning views of tropical rainforests, and you may see the rare Udzungwa red colobus
  • Overnight: Stay at your lodge or camp near Udzungwa.

Day 7: Full Day in Udzungwa Mountains National Park

  • Full-Day Trekking: Spend the day hiking in the Udzungwa Mountains, known for their biodiversity. The trekking routes range from easy walks to more challenging climbs, offering you the chance to explore the park’s lush forests, see rare plants, and spot wildlife. Day 8: Udzungwa to Ruaha National Park

  • Transfer to Ruaha: After breakfast, depart for Ruaha National Park(approximately 4-5 hours by road).
  • Check-in: Upon arrival, check in at your lodge or camp inside or near Ruaha National Park.

Day 9 to Day 14: Exploring Ruaha National Park (7 Nights)

  • Morning & Afternoon Game Drives: Over the next 6 days, you will have multiple game drives in different regions of the park. Ruaha’s varied terrain, including riverbeds, hills, and open plains, offers diverse opportunities for wildlife sightings. The park is particularly known for its large elephant herdsand predator sightings (especially lions and cheetahs).
  • Optional Walking Safaris: For a more immersive experience, enjoy a walking safari with an armed guide. This offers the opportunity to explore the park’s ecosystems on foot.

Day 15: Ruaha to Iringa – Departure

  • Morning Game Drive: On your final morning in Ruaha, you will enjoy one last early morning game drive.
  • Return to Iringa: After breakfast, you will drive back to Iringa(approximately 3-4 hours).
  • Drop-off: You will be dropped off at your hotel in Iringa, or you can be transferred to the Iringa Airportfor your onward flight, concluding your 15-day safari adventure.
